2012 Scalpel 29er

The Scalpel 29 has been a long time in development with Cannondale. As their first 29’er full suspension bike, they took the time to get it right. By using new technologies pioneered in the Jekyll and a few new ones, the Scalpel 29 has a ride unlike any other. We’ve ridden it, it is amazing.

Cannondale Factory Racing and USA National team member Jeremiah Bishop said, “This thing is is SO fast and more responsive than I thought any 29er full suspension bike could ever be! WOW!”

  • On the carbon models, they use the BallisTec carbon fiber which is far more durable than other carbon fiber. The resin used in BallisTec is much like what is used in carbon fiber baseball bats which is designed to withstand repeated intentional impacts. People are sometimes apprehensive of carbon mountain bikes, BallisTec resolves that issue.
  • The Scalpel 29 adds a pivot at the bottom bracket, but it uses the Jekyll’s double-stacked bearings with a thru-axle design to eliminate flex. All of the pivots use a similar design to increase center stiffness – the flop felt when changing direction from one side to the other. The 26″ Scalpel is proud of its zero-pivot design, it just didn’t make sense for the 29’er. The carbon models use a pivotless carbon rear seatstay/chainstay junction which adds to the lateral stiffness for more efficient and predicable handling.
  • Carbon models feature an adjustable head angle thanks to a swappable puck that changes the headtube angle by roughly 1.5 degrees. That provides versatility to give both a trail bike stability and race bike speed all in one.
  • Lefty is the stiffest 29’er fork on the market. Bigger wheels need more stiffness for steering accuracy, Lefty has it handled. With 100mm of buttery-smooth travel, you don’t realize how much it is doing until you lock it out.
  • Using the BB30 (on aluminum frames) and PressFit BB30 (on carbon frames), Cannondale reaps the benefits of stiffness, simplicity, and improved chainline. Remember, Cannondale invented BB30 over a decade ago, and other manufacturers are just now starting to catch on.
  • 142mm wide X12 axle system stiffens the rear end, builds into a stronger wheel, and simplifies wheel removal.
