Road Bikes 2012

2012 Cannondale Road Bikes

2012 is a great model year for Cannondale road bikes. This is the most advanced line of road bikes they’ve ever produced. Cannondale has a bike for every rider from the new road rider’s bike under $1000 to the most exotic ultralight $11,000 model and literally dozens of models in between. You don’t need to be an elite racer to appreciate and take advantages of the benefits available on a Cannondale.

SuperSix EVO

The new EVO is the next generation of carbon road bikes that doesn’t make you make any compromises with weight, stiffness, efficiency, comfort, or speed. It is THE lightest road bike frame on the market today, it also happens to be thousands of dollars less than other competitors attempts. Taking SAVE micro-suspension technology from the Synapse road bikes for road buzz absorption, continuous fiber construction from the Flash mountain bikes, and weight from the feather factory, the EVO has a smoothness and rolling efficiency never seen on a road bike. What do you call SAVE when it goes fast? Speed SAVE. You won’t believe the EVO until you ride one. Its almost not fair to call it a SuperSix.

SuperSix Full Carbon

2012 is another great year for the SuperSix Full Carbon. It is the same design found on the past 2010 and 2011 SuperSix frames but with more bang for the buck than ever before. The massive oversized tubing and joints give pro-level performance in handling and pedaling efficiency that until recently was reserved for bikes in a much higher price category. Whether you are racing on a budget, or just racing down the street, there is something special about the SuperSix. Starting at just $2000, the SRAM Apex version is an incredible value all the way up to the amazing new Shimano Ultegra Di2 electronic shifting model at $4500.

This is the second year of production on the world’s lightest aluminum road frame, the Cannondale CAAD10. It is the tenth generation of a long respected family of alloy road bikes, and it is the best yet by far. It is a far departure from even the legendary CAAD9 frame. If you look at the design of the frame, it is basically an aluminum SuperSix EVO. Speed SAVE technology smooths out the rear end, the Delta shaped seat tube stiffens the bottom bracket, the 1-1/8″ to 1-1/4″ tapered headtube and fork give razor sharp steering while still being comfortable, and did we mention light? It has a lighter weight than the majority of other manufacturer’s higher priced mid-range full carbon road frames. If you take it out for a ride, you won’t believe it isn’t carbon. There are racers across the country and world choosing the CAAD10 over their more expensive carbon bikes for many races.

CAAD8 was completely redesigned for 2012 too. CAAD8 uses similar design and technology as the CAAD10 with a modest amount of SAVE giving good handling on bad roads (and comfort), asymmetrical chainstays resist flex for speed and pedaling efficiency, and a slightly more upright riding position for comfort on the longer rides. Don’t confuse its mediocre price with its high-level ride.

Synapse Carbon

Synapse Carbon got an update for 2012 to increase everything it was already so good at: increased comfort, increased road handling, and a little weight loss. Synapse Carbon is for the rider looking to do longer rides and ride on rougher roads… its an adventure bike. Ask the Liquigas-Cannondale pro cycling team if it is race worthy – they ride it on the cobblestones of Paris-Roubaix and other “road” races with bad conditions. Synapse Carbon puts the rider in a more comfortable position that is more upright. The Synapse is often chosen by triathletes looking for a smoother ride so they aren’t exhausted and beat up heading into the run. It has a modular seatpost system that allows you to tune the ride geometry and comfort.

Slice Carbon

The Slice Carbon time-trial/triathlon bike stays strong another year having minor updates since its inception in 2008. Using technology pioneered on the Synapse, the Slice is one of the most comfortable TT/tri bikes on the market today. Athletes on the Slice have won Ironman (and Ironwomen) races for years. It isn’t the most aerodynamic bike in its class, but the comfort and efficiency outweigh aero gains. Ask those that have ridden and won on it. No doubt you’ll be researching in forums and reviews, look at what the pro athletes have to say about it.

 Super X Carbon Cyclcross

When looking for a bike to abuse in terrible fall/winter conditions in the name of fun, look no further than the incredible Super X. If you’ve heard of Tim Johnson, you’ll know the Super X is fast. It looks very similar to the EVO and Flash with SAVE chainstays, continuous fiber top tube/seat stay, Delta seat tube/BB junction, etc. It is just optimized for cyclocross use. We’re crazy about cyclocross and many of us race on the Super X so we can tell you by experience that there is nothing like it. Cyclocross bikes are also highly versatile bikes for going wherever since they are mostly a road bike. It can be the perfect commuter bike with room for wider tires and a little heavier duty frame so you don’t feel out of place in gravel, dirt, and hopping off curbs.

CAADX Cyclocross

CAADX is a more affordable alternative to the Super X. It is equally at home in a cyclocross race as it is with racks and fenders as a commuter bike. The CAADX is available in two builds this year to match your budget. Since cyclocross season is just a few months long, the CAADX is a great second bike and you don’t need to spend a fortune to get one.
